Wuhan football players fight in AFC Women's Asian Cup

China came back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat the Republic of Korea 3-2 in the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup final on Feb. 6. It was a hard-won victory. It has been 16 years since China took home the last trophy.

  Five of the team members are from the Wuhan Chegu Jiangda Women's Football Club. They are Wang Shuang, Zhu Yu, Yao Wei, Ma Jun and Liu Yanqiu.
  Wang Shuang was an important contributor to the entry of the Chinese team into the semi-finals. Of the 13 goals scored in the team’s first three games, Wang scored 5 goals and had 3 assists. Wang missed the semi-final with Japan due to injuries. In spite of her injuries, she returned to the starting line-up and fought hard for 60 minutes in the final with the Republic of Korea.

  Goalkeeper Zhu Yu is a senior currently studying at Jianghan University. She served as the goalkeeper of the Wuhan Chegu Jiangda Women's Football Club in the 2020 and 2021 Chinese Women's Super League and won the laurel consecutively, which paved her way to the roster of the national team. In this year’s Asian Cup, Zhu performed steadily and staged several key saves. Yao and Liu are also graduates of Jianghan University.
